Safe Haven

The City of Kendallville Police Department in cooperation with Mayor SuzAnne Handshoe, the East Noble School Corporation, and the Mad Ants Pro Basketball Team are announcing the formation of the “Safe Haven” Child Safety Program for the Kendallville area. The “Safe Haven” Program will provide in-school safety lessons for elementary age students in the East Noble School System. These elementary age students will receive safety booklets and will be taught safe practices related to playing outside, being lost, being approached by a stranger, being physically abused, and other important lessons to keep our children safe. The safety lessons will be taught by the Kendallville Police Department School Resource Officer and East Noble School personnel.

The second part of the “Safe Haven” Program will allow businesses and local families to be involved by volunteering to be a “Safe Haven” place for a child needing help. We will be working with the Chamber of Commerce, the East Noble School Corporation, and the local media to identify businesses and local families who are willing to display the “Safe Haven” placard in their front window to let a young child know that this is a place they can go to if they are in need of help. The only obligation each of these businesses and residences will have is to call the local police and wait with the child until an Officer arrives to provide assistance to the child. Each business or residence who volunteers to be a “Safe Haven” location will be verified by a police records check that they have no previous child abuse or sexual abuse history to assure the integrity of the program and safety of the children.

We are asking for the support of local businesses and organizations to provide the safety booklets, window placards, and other handouts and awards that will be part of the “Safe Haven” Program. All funds received will be used entirely for the “Safe Haven” Program. If your business is interested in partnering with the Kendallville Police Department, City of Kendallville, and the East Noble School Corporation to become a “SAFE HAVEN” Program sponsor please contact Chief Rob Wiley or Christine Howard at 347-0654.

The sponsor levels are as follows:

Gold Level: $750 Business name displayed on the “Safe Haven” window placard and Safety Booklet.

Silver Level: $300 Business name displayed on the “Safe Haven” Safety Booklet.
